Probity Medical Research Pays Tribute to Urological Research During Bladder Health Week

Diseases of the bladder can negatively affect every aspect of a person’s life.  Bladder cancer is a serious threat to public health. According to the Canadian Cancer society, Bladder cancer is the 5th most commonly diagnosed Cancer. In 2013 it is estimated that 2,100 people in Canada will die from bladder cancer.1

Early detection increases your chance of surviving bladder cancer.  It is essential that you consult your doctor if you notice blood in your urine, as this is one of the more common signs of this disease.  Bladder Cancer Canada’s public service campaign puts it simply: “See red? See your doctor.”2

It is critical that bladder cancer be treated as quickly as possible. It is important that patients have safe and effective treatment options to choose from.

Bladder Health Week is a welcome reminder of the efforts urology researchers make to expand and improve patients’ treatment options for bladder diseases.

Bladder cancer is but one of many diseases that affect the urinary system.  Conditions like interstitial cystitis (IC) and bladder pain syndrome (BPS) are painful illnesses that can seriously impact one’s health and happiness.  Overactive bladder, nocturia, and urinary incontinence can disrupt sleep, make everyday tasks difficult, and have a devastating impact on one’s social life.  In many cases, bladder conditions can lead to problems in professional and personal relationships.

The pain, discomfort, and inconvenience of bladder conditions make them a high priority for clinical research.  It is extremely important to work toward newer, more effective medications, as there is an ongoing need for treatments that preserve the dignity of those living with diseases of the bladder.

Probity Medical Research is proud to count a number of urology clinics among its network of affiliated research centres.  Our investigators have been instrumental in the testing and development of a number of innovative treatments, and are leading voices in the urological research community.  It is an honour to partner with leading urologists like Dr. Blair Egerdie (Kitchener, Ontario), Dr. Bernard Goldfarb (North Bay, Ontario), Dr. Joseph Zadra (Barrie, Ontario) and Dr. Stan Flax (North York, Ontario). These dedicated researchers exemplify Probity Medical Research’s commitment to developing newer, safer, more effective medications for bladder conditions.
